Benefits of filing a claim with the SIFC
Medical Treatment and Rehabilitation
The SIFC provides free medical services to address your occupational condition. This includes:
- General and specialized medical consultations
- Medications
- Diagnostic studies
- Prescribed medical equipment
The goal is to ensure your speedy recovery.

Reimbursement for Ticket Expenses
You can request reimbursement for transportation expenses to attend medical appointments:
- Approximate amount: between $1.50 and $2.00
- It depends on the route between your home and the SIFC installation
- Requires authorization from the appropriate staff
Death Benefits
If a worker dies from work-related causes and was undergoing treatment or receiving compensation, their dependent family members can apply for this benefit.
Applies to:
- Spouse and children under 18
- Until they are 25 years old if they are studying and they prove it
An investment of 50% of the switched value can be requested to cover essential needs.
Economic compensations
Transient Disability Diets
If your case is compensable, you can receive weekly pay for the time you can't work:
- 66%2/3 of weekly wages
- Minimum $30/Maximum $100 per week
- Up to 312 weeks
- Only if the case meets legal requirements
Compensation for Permanent Disability
Permanent Partial Disability
- Compensation of 662/3 of the wage
- Depending on the severity of your condition and legal table
- Maximum cap: $12,000
- Cannot be combined with diets
Total Permanent Disability
- Lifetime payment of up to $430 per month
- Alternative: investment equivalent to 540 weeks
- Statutory cases apply automatically (e.g. loss of limbs)
- Requires original birth certificate
Additional Reopening Compensation
You can request reopening your case up to 3 years after being discharged with disability.
- If there is new medical evidence, you may be able to receive additional compensation for temporary or permanent disability.
Compensation for Industrial Commission Decision
You have 30 days to appeal decisions of the SIFC to the Industrial Commission.
This body can:
- Grant new compensations
- Recognize unawarded disabilities
- Order additional treatment or services
If the appeal is favorable, The SIFC covers attorney's fees proportional to the benefit granted.
Payment of Compensations
Payments are issued in the following ways:
- Check
- TCT Card which works as a debit card, allows withdrawals and purchases, is automatically issued when the break begins
Workers outside Puerto Rico receive payments by check only.
Profitable Investment
Available to those with permanent partial or total disability.
You can use your compensation to purchase:
- Housing
- Vehicles
- Essential assets for your livelihood
The payment is issued as a joint check between the worker and the supplier or merchant.
